Former Fidelity Investment executive brings a distinguished record of success serving in multiple roles including as a director of emerging markets in both the debt and equity markets

BOSTON, MA, October 12, 2021 – J.P. Marvel Wealth Management, an independent wealth management firm in Boston, today announced the appointment of Jonathan Kelly to its board of advisors. Kelly brings more than 35 years of experience in investment management at the highest level of the industry.

“We are pleased to welcome Jonathan Kelly to our board of advisors,” said Joseph “Joe” Patton, CEO of J.P. Marvel. “Jonathan brings strong financial expertise and leadership in equity and fixed income markets. His perspective and knowledge, which includes both emerging markets and domestic investing, will be important as our firm continues to grow into the next decade.”

Mr. Kelly helped launch Fidelity’s Emerging Market Debt (EMD) business which led to steady growth in AUM and numerous awards for both fund performance and published research.  He later took on the role of director of emerging markets research for both debt and equity.  Mr. Kelly later returned to full time portfolio management and became the first manager of Fidelity Series Emerging Market Debt Fund (FEDCX) which was subsequently awarded best hard currency EMD fund by both Citywire (2018 for prior 3 years) and Lipper (2019 for prior 5 years).  Over his tenure, the fund beat 93% of its peers in the Morningstar universe and consistently maintained either a 4- or 5-star rating.  Prior to Fidelity, Mr. Kelly served as a research assistant to Fisher Black at Goldman Sachs.

Mr. Kelly has written several articles on EMD and is the lead author of The Relationship Between Bonds and Stocks in Emerging Countries (Journal of Portfolio Management, Spring 1998) which was awarded best international paper by both Institutional Investor and the International Investment Forum.  He has appeared in both the Financial Times and Wall Street Journal, has served on multiple sovereign and corporate creditor committees, and has spoken at various investment conferences sponsored by AIMR, EMTA, and others.

Mr. Kelly earned his undergraduate degree in computer science from Dartmouth College and his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.  At Wharton, he majored in finance and earned a Weiss Fellowship for international finance under the direction of Professor Marshall Blume.

“I have known Joe Patton for over two decades and have always admired his integrity and his work,” said Kelly. “I look forward to joining the already strong advisory board at J.P. Marvel Wealth Management and to collaborating with the entire team.”

Founded in 2007, J.P. Marvel offers customized wealth management services and portfolio construction for high-net-worth individuals and families. The firm also develops wealth solutions for foundations and endowments.

“I’m very pleased to have Jonathan join us. With his addition, our board will be more robust, and allow us to better serve our clients,” said Joseph “JP” Patton, President of J.P. Marvel.  “On top of that, I look forward to working with someone so experienced in leading our field in broader thinking — a style of thinking I value.”
